Marianne Curley’s Old Magic
Teen fiction
Review
I read this novel several years ago, but it has always stayed with me, and I recently re-read it.
Kate meets Jarrod, a boy in desperate need of help, and together they go on an adventure to save his family. That is the synopsis for this novel, yet it doesn’t even begin to describe how much fun it is to read!
My only complaint about this novel is that it is not nearly long enough, and the characters should be older However, it does not feel incomplete or rushed. Curley’s writing is emotive and deep, and pulls you in to the action.
This story is so different to ones that you have read – it is about witchcraft and medieval magic, and it has a fair share of romance in it too!
I do disagree that it is part of children’s literature because it definitely appeals to wider audiences – I have lent my copy out several times and all my friends have enjoyed the story.
I’ve also seen that a lot of reviews online say the same thing – it’s not for kids! It’s for all of us young adult fiction lovers!
All in all, it is a lovely book and I definitely recommend it! You will not put it down till you have finished the story because it pulls you in.
