The Wizard of Oz series by L. Frank Baum
Fantasy fiction
Review
After reading Wicked, I was adamant to read the original that inspired it; having only ever watched the movie! I was shocked! Usually I read books first!
Baum’s novel is a fantasy classic. Most know the story; Dorothy and Toto are transported in a tornado to Oz; accidently killing the Wicked Witch of the East. She needs to get to the Emerald city to go to the Wizard to find her way home.
It is written in an old fashioned way, with quick short adventures that one can imagine would have been in replacement of TV episodes we have now. This however, did not bother me.
Baum’s novel is not just a children’s fantasy; there are more gory scenes, a world of china and hammer headed people! I hope that that wets your thirst to read this classic!
The most I would say is that you may ‘think’ you know the story, like I did, but unless you read it, you have missed out on a lot!
Also, I must say that Baum got so many requests from children to write more that he wrote 13 more novels around the land of Oz, every year until he died. That is pure author dedication. <3
